Spending an extended period in a shelter can have a severe impact on a dog. Many shelters witness formerly happy and optimistic dogs become despondent after enduring months of rejection.
This is the situation for a dog named Major, currently at a shelter in Indiana. Major has been “crying endlessly” for over 260 days after being abandoned by his previous family. Nonetheless, his friends at the shelter remain hopeful that the right family for him is out there somewhere.
Major is a 4-year-old terrier/pitbull mix under the care of the Humane Society for Hamilton County in Indiana.
He was brought in as a stray last summer. A Facebook post detailed that Major was microchipped, allowing shelter employees to contact his original owners. They promised to pick him up but never showed.
Major has been at the shelter ever since. Despite the initial heartbreaking rejection, Major remained in good spirits at first. The humane society described him as a “sweet and sensitive” dog with a “big heart” who enjoys playing and adores his Jolly Ball.
The staff affectionately called him a handsome boy, giving him nicknames like “Major hunk” and “Major heartthrob.” Unfortunately, potential adopters overlooked his wonderful qualities for months.
Shelter staff have observed that the repeated rejections have dampened Major’s once-bright personality.
“His spunky personality is dimming,” the humane society posted on Facebook. “This once jolly ball-lovin’ boy now sits in his room and cries endlessly.”
To alleviate his stress, the shelter has moved Major out of the kennels and into the visiting room. However, they know the only true solution is finding Major a permanent home as soon as possible.
Major would thrive in a family without young children or cats. He can get along with other dogs but isn’t always aware of his own strength, so a meet-and-greet is recommended.
While Major may not be suitable for every home, there must be a family out there that would be a perfect match for this sweet and playful dog. “If you’re ready to welcome a loving, strong, and playful friend into your life, Major is the one for you!” his adoption page reads.
